Why composting makes sense for home gardens
Bagged compost and soil amendments add up fast at checkout. A single season of vegetable gardening can easily consume two or three bags, and costs climb if you garden in raised beds. What to add and what to leave out
A compost pile works through microbial activity. Those microbes need two types of material to thrive: carbon-rich ingredients, commonly called browns, and nitrogen-rich ingredients, called greens. Aim for roughly two to three parts browns for every one part greens by volume.
Browns (carbon sources):
- Dry leaves
- Cardboard torn into small pieces (remove tape and staples)
- Plain paper and newspaper
- Straw or dry plant stalks
- Sawdust from untreated wood
Greens (nitrogen sources):
- Vegetable and fruit scraps
- Coffee grounds and paper filters

- Fresh plant trimmings
Keep these out:
- Meat, fish, and bones
- Dairy products and eggs (shells are fine)
- Oily or greasy food
- Pet waste
- Diseased plant material
- Treated or painted wood products

How to set up your compost pile
What you will need
You do not need a bin to compost. An open pile in a corner of the yard works, though a simple enclosure made from scrap lumber or wire mesh keeps things tidy and holds heat better. Aim for a pile that is at least three feet wide and three feet tall; anything smaller loses heat too quickly to break down efficiently.
Choose and prepare your composting spot
Pick a location with partial shade if possible. Full sun dries a pile out faster, requiring more frequent watering. Place the bin or mark off a three-by-three-foot area on bare soil rather than concrete so that worms and beneficial organisms can enter from below.
Build your base layer with browns
Start with a four- to six-inch layer of coarse brown material such as straw, wood chips, or torn cardboard. This bottom layer creates air pockets and prevents the pile from becoming a soggy mat at the base.
Add greens and alternate layers
Add two to three inches of green material on top of the base layer. Then cover with another two to three inches of browns. Continue alternating layers each time you add new material. Smaller pieces break down faster, so chop or tear scraps before adding them when you can.
Moisten and cover

Turn the pile regularly
Use a fork or shovel to turn the pile every one to two weeks. Move material from the outside toward the center, where temperatures are highest. Regular turning introduces oxygen, which speeds microbial activity. With consistent turning, you can have usable compost in eight to twelve weeks during warm months.
Keeping the pile healthy over time
Composting is not a set-it-and-forget-it process, but the maintenance involved is minimal. The two things that most often stall a pile are too much moisture and too little air. A pile that smells like ammonia usually has too many greens and needs more browns. A pile that is bone-dry and not breaking down needs water and a turn.
Check moisture by squeezing a handful of material. It should feel like a wrung-out sponge, damp but not dripping. In dry climates or during summer, you may need to water the pile occasionally. In rainy regions, covering the pile with a tarp during heavy rainfall prevents waterlogging.
Finished compost is dark brown, crumbly, and smells like fresh earth. There should be no recognizable food scraps remaining.
